NightBokLight

internship at the Glasbruk
Mats Jonasson Målerås, Sweden

During my two-month internship I was able to get involved in all production departments of the glass manufactory. Sandblasting, grinding, polishing, engraving, painting and casting the glass were my activities. Only the glass blowing was unfortunately not possible for me.

During the last two weeks of the internship all doors were open for me and I was able to pursue my own project. I designed a night lamp that is both a bookshelf and a shelf and extinguishes the light when the book is put away.

Thus I combined the old handicraft of glass processing with modern design. I made the mould out of plaster, a negative out of hardened sand. I poured 1100°C hot glass into the sand mould and let the blank cool down from 700°C for 36 hours.

I further processed the glass with drilling, sandblasting, engraving, grinding and polishing. In order to accommodate the electronic components, I combined the glass with wooden elements.
